On 3 December 2014 I was briefly QRV from Jersey, at the QTH of Matt MJ0ASP in St. Aubin. I needed a few more air miles for my BA ‘Gold’ card, and it seemed like I needed to make a very short trip to push me over the line. I decided that it would be a perfect opportunity to visit a fellow radio amateur and perhaps make a few QSOs.
This trip was fitted into a half day away from the office! I left my desk in Cambridge after lunch, flew out of Gatwick on the BA direct flight to Jersey at 4pm – dealing with work emails at the terminal before flying – and was at Matt’s fantastic wine shop (Vins Direct) at about 5pm.
Matt kindly provided a short wine tasting session and some nibbles, before we dashed upstairs to his shack where I made 50 QSOs using the loft antenna and ATU. Although weak, European signals were workable and I had an absolute blast on the band. All too soon, I was jumping back in a taxi to the airport, and eventually arrived back in London around 8.40pm.
This trip was a lot of fun! While obviously artificially hurried, it was fun to take on another new challenge! I would like to thank Matt his friendly hospitality, for getting into the spirit of this DX jaunt, and for kindly letting me operate his station. Thank you, Matt!
