GB7CDX back on the air · 7 March 2006 by Michael Wells
GB7CDX is a DX Cluster node, providing a real-time view of DX ‘spots’ and allowing users to report interesting callsigns currently on the air. It is located at the shack of Fred Hanscombe G4BWP, in Red Lodge, Suffolk, and administered by members of the Cambridge University Wireless Society.
GB7CDX offers a packet radio link at 1200 baud on 70.325MHz. In recent years, DX Clusters have moved almost completely onto the internet, and away from the traditional packet radio modes. CDARCS field contests rely on an RF link, though, and the Cambridge University Wireless Society (CUWS) station in Madingley is also reliant on packet as the shack does not have telephone or internet facilities.
GB7CDX has been rebuilt by members of the CUWS club using hardware donated by members. The 4m antenna for the cluster now faces Cambridge, offering much improved reception in and around the City. Our thanks to Fred for his support in allowing us to undertake this work at his home.
